Equine Biomechanics: Practical Applications for Therapists

Class structure: This is a one-day intensive intended for individuals who are currently in practice, or else training to become, hands-on equine therapists; all modalities are welcome. Practicing farriers are also invited to attend. A series of morning and afternoon lectures followed by discussion. Introduction to biomechanical modeling and paradigmatic thinking. Lunch break and morning and afternoon coffee breaks. Hours 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Morning lecture no. 1: Paradigmatic Thinking and Paradigm Shift  Its Implications for Horse Management and Care.

Morning lecture no. 2: Topological Anatomy of the Equine Body and Limbs: Finding and Understanding Palpation Points

Morning lecture no. 3: Planes of Assessment: The Right Way to Evaluate the “Straightness” of Limbs and to Judge Livestock.

Morning lecture no. 4: Straight Carriage, the Key to Soundness and Performance. Anatomy and the Connection to Collection.

Afternoon lecture no. 1: Straight Carriage and the Hoof-Cone: Modeling Growth, Wear, Breakover and Deformation

Approximately 2:30 p.m.: Adjourn to riding stable/arena/place where horses can be worked with.

Topological Anatomy: Hands-On practice with palpation points and palpable musculature and soft tissues. Includes demonstrations of head-twirling/perivertebral muscle release technique; untracking; single-stepping
