Course Description

The equine lymphatic system is fundamental to tissue-fluid homeostasis, immune surveillance and the transport of fluid, proteins and other substances from the interstitial environment.
Understanding this system requires considerably more than learning a sequence of massage techniques.

 

This Level 7 programme begins with the scientific foundations of equine lymphatic anatomy, physiology, microcirculation, interstitial fluid dynamics and lymph transport.

 

Students then examine what happens when tissue-fluid homeostasis is disrupted, including the mechanisms of oedema, increased lymphatic load, reduced transport capacity, acute and chronic lymphatic dysfunction, inflammatory swelling, systemic causes of oedema and chronic lymphatic disease.

 

Only after establishing this foundation do students progress to practical Manual Lymphatic Drainage and kinesiology taping.
Throughout the programme, students are taught to distinguish between: Observation → Interpretation → Diagnosis

and to work within an appropriate professional scope.


The programme integrates theory, practical skill development, case-based reasoning, treatment planning, outcome monitoring, veterinary collaboration and professional documentation.

This professional programme is designed for applicants with an existing relevant qualification or professional background, including:

• equine physical therapists;

• equine bodyworkers;
• equine massage/soft-tissue practitioners;
• veterinary physiotherapists;
• physiotherapists working appropriately within the equine sector;

• veterinarians;
• veterinary nurses/technicians where appropriate;
• other suitably qualified equine rehabilitation professionals.

Applicants must meet Equi-Ed entry requirements before acceptance onto the programme.

On successful completion, graduates will be able to:

•  Explain advanced equine lymphatic anatomy, physiology and fluid

   dynamics;

•  Explain mechanisms contributing to oedema and altered tissue-fluid

   homeostasis;

•  Distinguish lymphatic dysfunction from other possible contributors to

   swelling;

•  Characterise equine swelling objectively and systematically;

•  Recognise acute, chronic and acute-on-chronic presentations;

•  Identify red flags, contraindications and situations requiring veterinary

   assessment;

•  Apply Manual Lymphatic Drainage safely and appropriately;

•  Apply equine kinesiology taping where clinically appropriate;

•  Integrate assessment, treatment and reassessment;

•  Modify or defer intervention when required;
•  Maintain professional clinical records;

•  Communicate appropriately with owners, veterinarians and other

   professionals;

•  Critically evaluate evidence and therapeutic claims;

•  Distinguish physiological plausibility from demonstrated clinical

   efficacy

The programme comprises 370+ learning hours across guided learning, live teaching, practical training,

independent study, skills practice, coursework, case work and assessment.

Most participants complete the programme within 12 months, depending on their existing workload and pace of study. The flexible blended format allows you to progress through online modules at your own speed, while scheduled practical sessions ensure hands-on skill development is fully supported.
